Why I wrote this book
After writing The Clarity to Live Well, I realized something crucial was missing—a framework specifically for when everything fractures. The diagnosis. The "you have cancer" or "significant heart disease" or "terminal illness."
When doctors deliver these words, something happens to your brain. It shuts down. You can't think clearly. Fear hijacks every decision. Your family responds differently than you do. Healthcare providers assume you understand when you don't.
This book explains why—and what to do about it.
When Everything Changes maps the four distinct stages your brain moves through after a serious diagnosis:
🧊 Freeze — The initial shutdown. Not weakness. Biology.
🏃 Flight — Fear-driven avoidance and denial. Why families misinterpret it.
⚔️ Fight — Reclaiming agency through action.
🎯 Focus — The stage most books ignore, but the one that determines outcomes.
It's grounded in neuroscience, informed by years of navigating serious illness, and packed with practical tools for patients, families, and healthcare providers.
